Different Facial-Themed Masks of Africa

Just about every region in Africa has a mask that is unique to the people of that area. They are all handmade by local artisans and though the basic styles may be similar in a specific region, no two are ever really identical. Another great thing is that thanks to the wonders of the internet, you no longer have to travel far and wide to get these. Some very reputable companies such National Geographic have gone to the ends of the earth and done the hard work of bringing the different works of these artisans to you, available at your fingertips.

What I particularly like is that for these masks of Africa, the money from the sales of these items actually does go to the artists who make them! It's like giving a gift not just to the married couple but also to a small business owner in a developing country. That really should make you feel even better about your gift.

Brave Buffalo Ashanti Wood Maskmasks of africa, masks from africa, africa mask

This mask symbolises bravery and strength; the buffalo is transformed into a mask. As he expertly carves African sese wood, Eric Danquah explores the concepts of Ghana's Ashanti people.

About the Artist: Eric Danquah displayed interest in carving as a young man, and would sometimes go around helping the carvers of his community. However, his mother wanted him to be an electrician so she sent him to the city to study electronics. Soon enough, Danquah realized that this was not his calling, and he decided to return home to learn the art of carving, for which he had already demonstrated talent.

In his own words, Danquah says "I learned carving from a shop for three years and later established my own workshop. I started carving as a full time profession in the year 1997 at the age of twenty-three, and now have one boy I work with. We are four children in the family, among which my junior brother and sister are also talented with the skill of carving. My brother helps me a lot at the shop."

Danquah uses sese wood as his primary material, as he uses chisels, gouges, and axes to extract its natural beauty.
